January 16th - Dolphin stranding in Kiawah

Writer: Nicole PrincipeNicole Principe

We received a call from Janet Thibault with SCDNR on 16 January 2024 about a deceased dolphin on the beach in front of the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Kiawah Island, Charleston County, SC. Nicole Principe, Bonnie Ertel, and LMMN volunteers Pat and Val Luzadder met Janet on scene to perform a necropsy.

This was a moderately decomposed, 230 cm, male, bottlenose dolphin.

The immediate cause of death is unknown. Significant findings include parasitic infection of the lungs (probable verminous pneumonia) and infection of the stomach and intestines.

Thank you to everyone who helped on this case!
